The 2°C goal in climate science, stemming from the Paris Agreement, aims to combat carbon emissions and limit global average temperature increase to ""well below"" 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900), with efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
The Paris Agreement has been ratified or acceded to by the EU, China, and 193 other states. The United States was an original signatory, withdrew, re-entered, and withdrew again on January 20, 2025.
